Review:
"Haiga is defined here
as a kind of Japanese ink painting
(suiboku). The conclusion to the
introduction states that Hirata Shusui
(1909- ) once said that the ideal in haiga
is for the poem to be written by one
person, and the picture to be painted by
another. The artist can be inspired by the
haiku and try toexpress it through
painting. This kind of interaction produces
the best possible conditions for haiga. And
it is through this process that the haiga
in this book were created by poet
calligraphers and artists working together.
Instructions are given for those who wish
to try the art themselves. There is advice
on the types of paper, ink and brush to
use, posture and technique. The largest
section of the book consists of ILLUSTRATED
CLASSICAL POEMS. There are over 70 examples
of work by Shiki, Basho, Buson and others.
These are displayed in Japanese romanji
with English translation and calligraphy by
Suiyu Enomoto on the left-hand pages, with
the Haiga of Yukki Yaura displayed on the
facing right-hand pages. Running to some
240 pages printed on gloss art-paper, this
books forms not only an excellent
introduction to haiga, but also the
classical Japanese haiku and contemporary
English-language haiku."
