A Glimpse Through the Void
The images in this exhibition are records of places and moments where I have experienced a heightened awareness of those repetitions of associations that occur in a lifetime. Associations that may be separated in time and space but that have an archetypal commonality, having root in formative times and perhaps even in some cases going back to some evolutionary, ancestral trait or form of perception.
By eliminating the superfluous and allowing detail to emerge from the constraints of the technique, an evocation of elements not necessarily bound by a particular narrative emerge. With respect to the photographs taken in Lincolnshire this is underlined by titles that make references to other places and times.
Paradoxes and turbulence lie beneath the apparently peaceful surfaces both in the content and manner in which the images where made. Dealing with the tensions that emerge a cathartic process ensues; hidden narratives gradually unfold but never force themselves to the surface. I have to search carefully and listen quietly. There seems to be no point of revelation but a continuous story, a journey described by what is said as much as what is left unsaid.
Part of the process involves building the camera sometimes specifically for a given subject. This holistic approach makes the act of preparation, taking the photograph and printing the negative, a performance in which the photograph is the final documentation of the enactment of a visualisation.
Avenues
Trees and roads hold a strong significance, the former a symbol of strength, life and longevity, link us to the earth and give us roots. They have spoken to our ancestors and will be here long after we have left. Roads transport us to destinations, taking us to other places in time and space. A way to and from, that can help define our life time.
Whenever I see a way lined with trees these two symbols become significantly reinforced with a sense of the human and elemental. I sense a link with distant people that have undergone countless journeys throughout history.
